As a liquid cannot be compressed, only refrigerant vapour should enter a compressor, the purpose of the Suction line accumulator is to prevent liquid refrigerant from entering and causing damage to the compressor, which may range from minor progressive and increased wear to compressor bearings due to oil dilution, or to catastrophic failure of the compressor due to liquid slugging.
Gravity ensures that liquid refrigerant entering the accumulator sits at the bottom of the accumulator giving it time to boil off and become vapour, which is then sucked back to the compressor.
The suction line accumulator is placed after evaporator and as close to the compressor as possible.
